James Henry Stone [st.1.5.3]

James Henry Stone was the third child of James Stone & Mary Ann Sutton born John St, West Bromwich & christened July 27th, 1851 at Christ Church, West Bromwich.

In 1861 the family were living in Parker St, Bradford, Manchester, Lancs & James  had 3 brothers.

By 1871 the family had returned to Staffordshire & were living in the High St, Tunstall, Wolstanton. James & his brother Joseph were all iron workers like their father. James now had 3 sisters,  Esther (8), Rachael (4) & Catherine (3).

James married Alice Redford in Oct-December 1877 at Salford Register Office.  Alice was born July-September 1852 at Swinton, near Manchester, Lancs, the daughter of Priscilla & Robert Redford, a cotton weaver.

The family could not be found in the 1881 census.

In 1891 James & Alice were living at 8 Cleggs Square, Pendleton, Salford & James was an iron puddler.  They had 6 children by this time – Enoch (12), William (10), Robert R (8), Priscilla (5), Esther (3) & Jessie (1).

By 1901 James & Alice had moved to 10 Dumville St, Pendleton.  James had now become a milk salesman.  Children still at home were Enoch, a librarian, William, a grocer’s assistant, Robert R, a warehouse assistant, Priscilla, a bleach worker, Esther & Jessie who were at school.  Living with them was James’ widowed mother Mary Ann Stone.

They were still living at the same address in 1911 & James was now described as a salesman for the dairy Coop Society.  Daughters Esther & Jessie were still at home & worked as ‘reelers’ at the paper works.  It was noted on the census that James & Alice had had 8 children, only 6 of whom were still living.

Son Enoch had married Ada Derbyshire Longden on September 18th, 1902 at the parish Church of Charlestown, Salford.  In 1911 Enoch, an assistant librarian, & Ada & their 6 year old daughter Annie Derbyshire, were living at 26 Cromwell Rd, Pendleton.  Ada’s widowed mother, Mary Longden, was living with them.

Son William had married Eva Hawksworth in Jan-March 1903 at Salford.  By 1911 William, a grocer’s assistant & Eva had had 6 children, 5 of whom were still alive.  They were living at 27 Bradshaw St, Cromwell Rd, Pendleton.

Son Robert married Annie Lizzie Chapman in April-June 1907 at Salford.

Daughter Priscilla married Thomas Watson in 1910 at Salford & in 1911 they were also living at 4 Bradshaw St, Pendleton.  Thomas was a blacksmith for the Cooperative Wholesale Society.

James died July-September 1913 at Salford.

Alice died July-September 1920 at Salford.

Daughter Jessie, aged 30, married Josiah Buckley, a grocery branch manager, on December 8th, 1920 at Charlestown Independent Chapel, Broughton Rd, Pendleton.  Josiah was 28 years of age, the son of John Buckley, a stoker.  Jessie’s sister Esther was a witness at the wedding.

Daughter Esther married Edward Goodrick Field, a widower, on October 11th, 1930 at St Ignatius, Salford.  Edward, a cashier, died in 1934 & widowed Esther was living with her sister Priscilla & husband Thomas Watson in 1939 at Urmston, Lancs.
